Thread of Silk

Interactive System for Museo Della Seta (Como)

An interactive, multi-touchpoint system that immerses museum visitors and the local community in the rich heritage of the Silk Museum, enabling a deeper emotional connection through meaningful stories and shared experiences.

Goal

Threads of Silk is an interactive system designed to make the Silk Museum’s community heritage more visible and participatory. Discussions with museum staff revealed that personal stories and lived experiences were often overshadowed by the focus on artifacts and machinery. The project aims to bridge this gap by creating a platform where individuals connected to the silk tradition can share their narratives, deepening the emotional connection between visitors and the museum’s history.

Design process

The development of Threads of Silk followed a structured design process, beginning with research through on-site visits, desk studies, and ecosystem mapping to understand the existing narrative landscape. Staff interviews helped identify opportunities to enhance storytelling within the museum. The ideation phase involved developing solutions, wireframing interactions, and refining them through user testing, heuristic evaluation, and concept videos. By analyzing different user scenarios, we ensured that each touchpoint was intuitive and tailored to the needs of various audiences.

How it works

Visitors can explore an interactive screen to discover stories, related objects, and hidden connections between narratives, enriching their understanding of the exhibits. A dedicated section on the museum’s website allows users to contribute their own stories in different media formats, also accessible via QR codes linked to the interactive display. To maintain quality and coherence, museum staff can manage submitted content through a back-end platform, curating stories, organizing materials, and creating events. By capturing personal experiences and emotions, Threads of Silk transforms the museum into a dynamic storytelling space, fostering a stronger link between the past and present.
